Return of the Gray Ghost

On 2 February 1996, Peter Merlin and Tony Moore located the crash site of the "Gray Ghost" using the information from the Sheriff's report. Merlin and Moore recovered some of the remaining debris for the Air Force Flight Test Center Museum at Edwards AFB. Most of the remaining debris was burned, but there were recognizable fragments of internal structure, electric batteries, and instrument panel fragments. Some components had part numbers and inspection stamps.

They had told Levier that they were searching for it. He remembered it well: "That's the airplane that tried to kill me!" On 26 March, Pete and Tony met with LeVier in Burbank to reunite him with the Gray Ghost.

It was thrilling to discuss the incident with the pilot himself and hear his firsthand account of the event. For more than two hours, LeVier spun tales of aviation adventure. Pete and Tony showed him pieces of the Gray Ghost and told him they were donating them to the Air Force Flight Test Center Museum at Edwards.

LeVier contemplated one of the artifacts: part of the seat belt buckle. This was very likely the same piece that cut LeVier's chin as he struggled to escape from the doomed jet. "When you give this piece to the museum," he said, "You tell them this took a swipe at Tony LeVier."
