In a West Texas Town

Tony Moore obtained some aerial photos of the XB-51 crash site at El Paso. Unfortunately, the site appeared to have been eradicated. Located adjacent to Army housing at Ft. Bliss, the sand dunes where the airplane broke apart had apparently been bulldozed. Except for a few small sections, the area was graded flat.

On 26 March 1999 Pete Merlin and Tom Kinzel visited the site. Not only had it been flattened, it was also covered with a layer of crushed rock to keep the sand from blowing into the housing area. This was almost the worst-case scenario for finding crash debris.

Only one small island of sand dunes remained. It was directly in line with the flight path of the XB-51 and just across the train tracks. Here, Pete and Tom found a scattering of aircraft debris. These were the last remaining pieces of the first XB-51.
